The project, influenced by the reading of Michel Foucault's Heterotopias and an examination of spaces of exception in New York City, is a hybrid Amtrak station and flea market, two programs that are intrinsically nomadic with degrees of social, political and economic implications. Located at the intersection of Hamilton Heights and the expanding Columbia University campus along the Henry Hudson Parkway, the site is an edge condition, acting like a hinge between an established community and a developing institutional neighborhood.  The long and narrow property therefore hosts a weaving of two directionalities. Leaving the city to catch a train, a commuter is guided toward a monumental facade of masonry and arches. Oppositely, when approaching the market from Hamilton Heights, one is met with material lightness and transparency, enabling flexibility for the vendors and public use. The architecture thus proposes a highly functional space for two disparate programs and encourages a serendipitous
blending of the two neighborhoods in a unified space.
